Wildlifemanagement Lower Austria - Beaver 2007
Abstract
After years of eradication the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) has been reintroduced in the Austrian Danube floodplains 30 years ago becomming part of the native wildlife fauna again. The growing number of individuals as well as the ongoing migration and dispersion of the beaver in the cultural landscape cause an increase in various human induced landuse conflicts recently (agriculture, forestry, pondfarming, water management, human settlement and infrastructure). With regard to the current environmental situation a new concept for a beaver management has been developed dealing with the following topics: documentation of the recent beaver distribution, management of conflict cases, use of management techniques, distribution of biological information and public relation work.
