Transposable Elemetns in Vitis spp.
Abstract
Despite it is well known that TEs can have a big impact on the host genome, characterised by chromosome braking, gene knockdown, alternate splicing, sequence shuffling, increasing genome size etc, only few TEs (of class II) were described in grapevine so far: Tvv 1 (Pelsy and Merdinoglu 2002), Vine 1 (Verriès et al. 2000), and Gret 1 (Kobayashi et al. 2004). The last two were found to be inserted in the Adhr and the VvmybA1 gene respectively, proving that TEs can alter genes in grapevine. It is very likely that more types of class I and class II elements exist in the grapevine genome. Therefore a higher resolution view on TEs in grapevine, their distribution, activities and regulation would be a valuable knowledge to geneticists and plant breeders. Grapevine genotypes are vegetatively propagated and, existing for hundreds of years, are used for the selection of clonal lines with distinct phenotypes. These phenotypes derive from mutations to which the contribution of TEs has still to be evaluated. In our work we try to shed more light on the presence of TEs in the grapevine genome by in silico analyses as well as sequencing of some novel elements in grapevine.
