StartClim2007.B: Health risks for the Austrian population due to the depletion of stratospheric ozone
Abstract
It is the main objective of the project to intensify the scientific research on the effect of increased UV-radiation on Austrian public and to consider the consequences and counteractive actions. The geographical distribution and the chronological progression of incidence and mortality data of melanoma and other malign skin tumors are analysed. The biologically effective UV-radiation (Erythema, DNA-damage, Photocarcinogenese) during ozone mini holes above Austria will be investigated and their contribution to the cumulative annual radiant exposure (dose) as well as their fraction of the overall exposure will be determined. The influence of ozone, clouds and albedo on the long-term variation of UV-radiation will be estimated. A concept for future research of the relevance of increased UV-radiation and the consequences for the Austrian population will be developed.
