Cormorant Monitoring in Lower Austria 2008/09 - 2012/13
Abstract
Since the mid-eighties the increasing number of migrating cormorants, Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis, in middle Europe during the winter seasons has become subject of severe conflicts and ongoing discussions between various interest groups. Lower Austria issued a time-limited regulation, which allows the harassment and shooting of cormorants along defined river sections focusing on trout and grayling regions. Simultaneous roost counts are carried out to collect data about the wintering population, effects of harassment actions are monitored to evaluate the observed results with respect to regional distribution.
