Small Diameter Hardwood - New potentials using hardwood with small diameters in forestry and timber industry
Abstract
Due to silvicultural considerations, the planting of hardwoods was forced in the recent past. Consequently an increased amount of hardwoods is now available in the forests of Lower Austria. But important thinnings of theses woods can not be carried out satisfactorily due to missing utilisation potentials for hardwood with small diameters (SDH). Today SDH is used mainly for pulp- ore firewood regardless of the potential wood quality of this resource. Often necessary thinnings are not done or even roundwood is led unused in the forest because the sales revenue does not break even skidding. However, in small niche markets SDH is already used for high added value products, which profit of its decorative texture. The timber industry could use this resource – adequate wood quality provided – for a distinct lower price. Preconditions are to characterize the raw material according to wood-technological characteristics and to develop a market and to guarantee thus a lasting supply.
