Monitoring and modelling of riverbank erosion within the pilot project “Riverbank Restoration Thurnhaufen”
Abstract
The removal of riverbank protection structures in the Donau-Auen National park within the Thurnhaufen section is a big step forward in rehabilitation of morphodynamic processes. Lacking process understanding within the topic of riverbank erosion inhibits the prediction of river-morphological development and risks may be unidentified. The aim of this project is to document the occurring bank erosion by determining where, when, how far and by what riverbank erosion takes place. To comprehend and reconstruct riverbank erosion, a process analysis is conducted. The parametrization of the riverbank material and the consideration of the factors involved in riverbank erosion in modelling enable statements about the lateral development of the Danube River in the Thurnhaufen section.
