Exploring the role and metabolism of zearalenone and other Fusarium compounds in the model plant Arabidopsis
Abstract
Exploring the role and metabolism of zearalenone and other Fusarium compounds in the model plant Arabidopsis Genes involved in plant’s response (signaling and metabolization) to the putative Fusarium virulence factor zearalenone (ZON) are potential newtargets for resistance breeding and invivo/vitro detoxification strategies. In previous studies we could show that ZON caused changes in transcription in the model plant Arabidopsis and repressed preferentially genes encoding proteins implicated in cell wall remodeling and reinforcement (extensins, peroxidases etc.). We further could isolate a mutant, zorro (ZON responsive root) displaying a short root phenotype which upon addition of ZON is restored to wild-type levels. The goal of the project is to use Arabidopsis to clarify which signal transduction components are targeted by ZON and whether known cell wall integrity sensing systems are involved. The transcriptional response of ZON is transient due to rapid conversion of ZON into glucosides and further metabolites as intermediates. We plan to study the mechanism of removal of ZON. Furthermore Arabidopsis will also be used to study other compounds identified in course of the SFB.
