Abstract
Based on a monitoring of grouse species in Tyrol in 2005 a long-term monitoring will be initiated in 2010. Within the pilot project methods for counting male capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) at leks will be improved in selected study areas. Furthermore, appropriate methods to assess the spatial use of these species will be established. This will be used to develop sustainable management strategies to protect grouse populations in Austria.
