Evaluation of Pomological Potential of Wild-type Bluberry provenances (Vaccinium myrtillus).
Abstract
In Austrian natural habitats of European blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillis) wild-type plants will be recognized, selected. Growth and development will be monitored, fruits harvestet and morphological described. Constituents like bioactive compounds, sugars and acids will be analysed. Ecological features of the habitat and mycorrhiza of the roots will be determined. Part of the research will be to develop a list of pomological descriptors. Storage trials sensory analysis will be conducted. Additionally plant-material will be collected and for establishing of mother-plants and organic growing systems used. Latter will be designed in different ways to be tested on efficiency. Minimal processing of fruits like drying, juice production and for jams is planned. Trials will be designed and set up at the research center for pomology and horticulture Jedlersdorf (Vienna). Effects of growing substrates, fertilization and irrigation will be monitored and analyzed.
