Methods for hybrid-breeding in oil pumpkin
Abstract
In this project the methodical framework for hybrid breeding in oil pumpkin we be developed. We will evaluate the genetic diversity within the Austrian oil pumpkin gene-pool. Special emphasis will be on novel pumpkin breeding germplasm developed in previous projects using crosses intra- and interspecific crosses for the introduction of resistance genes into oil pumpkin. Based on previous research projects we have access to 600 novel SSR markers for pumpkin. These markers will be employed to evaluate genetic distances and find associations of markers with important plant traits, such as disease resistance and quality. In addition SSR markers will be evaluated and used for hybrid seed quality control.
