Future of alpine freshwaters
Abstract
The project „Future of Alpine Freshwaters“ aims to provide sound, integrative basics for assigning protection and restoration priorities in river management. Therefore area-wide river related data for the alpine region will be gathered and harmonized. This should enable stakeholders in river management and nature protection to put future projects and decisions in a broader, alpine wide context. From the scientific point of view, a major reward of this project will be to develop a sound, consistent database that can be used for further projects and analysis in the field of applied river research (including diversity research, restoration ecology etc.). Within this preliminary study available data on geomorphologic, hydrologic, biological and socio-economic parameters of the big river systems in the Alps will be researched and documented in a meta-database. Additionally two workshops will be organized in order to discuss issues like data needs and gaps, appropriate data resolution and visualization techniques with potential users. Furthermore a literature review on the methodology of prioritizing protection and restoration measures will be conducted.
