Fischecological monitoring within the EU LIFE+ project Murerleben
Abstract
The Upper Mur River belongs to the ecologically most valuable river sections in Austria. About 75 % of this section are still in near nature-like condition. Due to the high quality of habitat in the Upper Mur River, the "king of fish" in Austria, the Danube salmon, still has aviable population there. Within the EU-program "LIFE+" the project "Murerleben" aims at the re-establishment and improvement of the natural floodplain with regard to flood protection. The project area includes the districts Murau, Judenburg, Knittelfeld, and Leoben, from the town Mauthof to the mouth of the tributary Kraubathbach. Apart from removing artificial riparian bank protection several re-connections of former side arms are included as improvements for the fish community.
