3D modeling and monitoring at the rumanian Danube between Clarasi and Braila
Abstract
The Romanian Danube between Calerasi and Braila (River-km 375-175), represents a widely intact bifurcation zone. Due to a progressive change in discharge distribution towards the left Danube arm, the right arm lacks water, leading to a detour for navigation of about 110 km on their way to the black sea. In order to increase discharge in the main arm, it is planned to build a sill which may affect sturgeon migration. To minimize the impact, an adaptive implementation and an accompanying monitoring is planned. Within a team of international experts, the impact of the measures will be monitored. In order to predict and analyze the impact of planned hydraulic engineering measures, a 3D hydrodynamic numerical model will be set up for the river reach. The objectives of the 3D modelling task are thus given by (i) determination of hydrodynamic variables (i.e., flow velocities, water surface elevations, turbulence properties); (ii) determination of sediment transport characteristics (i.e., suspended sediment concentrations, bedload transport rates) and the associated alteration of hydromorphology; (iii) analysis of the impact of the simulated hydraulic parameters on fish migration; due to the construction works planned. Additionally 3D flow velocity measurements with an ADV device are performed.
