Fish Feed Formulation with Insect Componentes
Abstract
Within the last decade, a strong networking team has been established in the field of water, aquaculture, fish feed, and limnology between BOKU representatives and Universities/Governmental Research organizations in Kenya and Ethiopia. The bilateral research work and teaching activities for graduate students, resulted in the EC funded BOMOSA project (Integrating BOMOSA cage fish farming system in reservoirs, ponds and temporary water bodies in Eastern Africa, INCO-CT_2006-032103, www.bomosa.org). The collaboration remained strong after conclusion of Bomosa project activities in October 2009. However, interesting questions arose from the research activities that could be formulated for future applied development issues. The design for the planned upcoming project is based on the results from different scientific activities, which have been undertaken in the last decade. A stable and sustainable network has been established between universities and governmental research organisations in Ethiopia, Kenya and Austria. The main focus is laid on the improvement of small scale-scale fish farming in the Eastern African region, with the extended aspect of parallel development of poultry production. The same feed components used in aquaculture will also be used in poultry. Previous experiments with insects from simple insect control activities (trapping in baited cylinders) in Ethiopia showed an amazingly high potential for the use of insects as fish feed component and will be one of the prominent topics to follow in the proposed project.
