BioBasis - Integrated biorefinery - supply of basic substrates from biogenic residues for the production of key chemicals, taking into account regional and econmic aspects
Abstract
The aim of the project is to identify untapped potential and to test new approaches to increase the efficiency in the usage of biomass via cascading utilisation, applying existing technologies as well as technologies still under development, in existing plants or in synergy with existing processing chains of enterprises. Currently, only a small percentage of the resulting biogenic waste material is used in a substance-based manner. The majority of residues is used for the production of biogas or is directly disposed. In terms of sustainable development, a cascading presents the optimum. Finding new possibilities for biogenic waste material usage is becoming increasingly attractive both in terms of ecological efficiency and from entrepreneurs perspective. Several companies are already undertaking internal R & D efforts to realise this process. In most of these cases, utilisation of in-house residues is the primary point of focus. As a result, possibilities for intra-enterprise synergies are hardly ever being detected. With the help of the project presented, ways and means for intra-enterprise use of organic residues should be demonstrated. On the basis of biogenic waste materials, substrates are defined for existing recycling technologies and optimised utilisation-chains to achieve key-products will be defined. The potential for realisation of the utilisation-chains developed is being assessed and if where necessary, additional research requirements will be declared by taking into account regional and seasonal availability of residual materials on one hand, and the availability and technological maturity of the required infrastructure on the other hand. In addition, the economic feasibility is checked through various model scenarios. To make a qualified statement regarding the possible untapped potential of the material residue and its implementation it is necessary to structure the necessary process chains from the residual material to the recycling process and to define the substance related, process related and economic parameters. On the material level it is required to specify the basis-substrate for the bio refinery technologies as well as the processes for the procurement of the residual material. Hereby, basis-substrate is defined as raw materials with ideal quality characteristics suitable for material-based utilisation chains. In defining the different substrate parameters it is especially necessary to focus on the required quality of the raw-input material to detect further unused residues that might have the required quality parameters. On a technical level, the very utilisation process technologies (fermentation, hydrolysis, thermal-chemical conversion processes …) are at the centre of attention. It is hereby required to highlight the breadth of application possibilities of each technology to define and identify further potential process adaptations. Parallel to the substance-based and the process engineering studies, the economics of the utilisation-chains will be assessed. Utilising model scenario calculations that include substrate procurement and supply as well as availability of technologies the potential profitability and the potential for realisation will be identified.
