StartClim2012.F: Values as performance indicators: a path to active climate protection
Abstract
According to the polls the great majority of Austrians (95%) is informed about climate change and perceives it as a serious threat to themselves and their families (54%). Still Austrian per capita GHG emissions trend does not show significant signals of reduction. People's decisions are driven by the values they hold—frequently unconsciously and sometimes to the virtual exclusion of a rational assessment of the facts. Some values provide a better source of motivation for engaging in activities that reduce personal and organization´s CO2 footprint than other values. The University for Natural Resources and Life Sciences is to serve as case study to learn how working with values can help to foster climate friendly action. This StartClim research project aims to identify the values and their indicators that are important for BOKU Stakeholders, using a methodology that has already been used successfully in civil society organizations. The intention is to trigger a discussion of those indicators with relevant groups that should lead to inclusion of these indicators in routine evaluations, and thereby strengthen those values that eventually lead to more climate friendly and sustainable actions. The choice of a Universität for this study makes sense, because institutions where future opinion leaders and decision makers are trained should not only raise awareness and offer knowledge, but also teach action and the way to action.
