SCHWALL SCHWEIZ – Alpenrhein
Abstract
The aims of the investigations of possible hydropeaking impacts at the Alpenrhein river are to derive basics for future discussions, planning and implementation of mitigation measures on both the national and the international context of hydropower use. In the framework of the project focus is given on interactions between local river morphology, hydropeaking and the related impacts on habitat distribution of targets species. Moreover, as an important issue for the Alpenrhein river, possible influences of hydropeaking on suspended load transport and possible clogging of bed surface sediments are investigated. Additionally, vertical bed material composition will be addressed in detail due to extended freeze-core sampling and the related vertical analysis of grain size distribution with focus of fine sediment concentrations. Focus of these sediment analyses is given on dewatering areas, permanent wetted areas and recorded spawning sites of salmonids. As central outcome, monitoring and modelling results (unsteady hydrodynamic-numerical, habitat modelling) should be implemented in the planning of mitigation measures at the Alpenrhein with consideration of local river morphology and catchment scale sediment regime.
