One major application field of phenol-formaldehyde based resins is the use as binders in the production of particle boards, boards, insulation materials (glass wool and mineral wool), providing adherence, coherency and additional strength to the main components.
Such resins are one of the fundamental chemical products being used at largest bulk scale.
The use of such resins poses not only the question of missing sustainability as they are so far based purely on petrochemical products, there are also severe disadvantages with regard to environmental compatibility, and health problems. Therefore, the need to replace such petrochemical-based resins by alternatives based on renewables became and becomes more pressing worldwide, and many industrial producers have realized the problem and start to address the issue by principal changes in their production philosophy and their strategic research and development plans.
The primary objective of this project is to use lignin-derived products and cellulose-derived products for reduction of formaldehyde, phenol and urea contents in conventional phenol-formaldehyde based resins.
The novelty is the use of modified lignin and cellulosics as a substitute for both phenol and urea, and the use of highly oxidized cellulosic fibers as formaldehyde substitute with additional cross linking properties. The aim is to add value to the by-products of the important Austrian forestry and pulp and paper industries by using non-modified and thus non-reactive lignin and cellulose wastes.
