Analysis of Fusarium ear rot on different maize genotypes in Kosovo and Albania
Abstract
Maize is an important cereal crop in Kosovo and a major component of animal food. In Kosovo approximately 60.000 – 70.000 ha maize are cultivated annually. The seeds for cultivation are largely imported from the neighbour countries und up to date no hybrids for multiplication are available. The average yield is 4.5 t ha-1, which does not fulfil the domestic demands of Kosovo. As a consequence, the selection of suitable maize hybrids for the producing region Kosovo is crucial in order to increase crop yield and quality. In addition, fungal diseases of maize – in particular Fusarium ear rot (FER) – represent a central problem. Several Fusarium species are widespread pathogens on maize in temperate climate and semi-tropical areas, including all European maize-growing areas. They cause root, stem and ear rot, with severe reductions in crop yield, often estimated between 10% to 30%. This disease is present in Kosovo and Albania and in different years it caused various damages in maize. Up to date, neither in Kosovo nor in Albania studies have been performed to test explicitly different maize genotypes for resistance against Fusarium ear rot. Therefore, this study aims to unravel the main genotypes that are resistant towards Fusarium spp. which could be used for cultivation in these regions. In addition we will investigate the Fusarium species causing Fusarium ear rot in Albania. Further, this research project will enable researchers to create a platform for future collaborative work among the partners involved in this project.
