Game and traffic in Lower Austria
Abstract
The aim of the project is to pursue the methods and implement the results of the precursor project „Wildlife and roads“ (project ID: 7209) in Lower Austria to reduce roadkill, gain data and to test recent preventive methods. Supervision and control of technical prevention methods is inevitable to gain a comprehensive insight regarding montage, operation, amenities and handicaps of the utilized devices different versions of equipment. On the basis of the well-established „roadkill data sheet“ spatio-temporal accident information in high detail should allow an further insight in roadill and its contributing factors. Additionally the analysis of the gathered information is fundamental to the economically worthwile use of different preventive methods. Efficiency tests are planned on different optic and acoustic wildlife warning reflectors as well as olfactoric repellents and accompanying measures. The project represents an integral approach through the involvement of all land user organisations and thematically involved authorities. The project´s focus is on hunting areas in Lower Austria with verifiable (data-sheet, VFP-value, etc.) above-average roadkill numbers. The goal is to considerable increase road safety for both humans and animals through appropriate planning in the application of technical and ecological prevention methods and to gain further information on factors influencing roadkill .
