Transforming Spaces: Breaking down social, cultural and planning barriers of Viennese adolecents in urban space utilisation
Abstract
Vienna is a save city with a high living quality and attractive areas for outdoor activities and recreation. Nevertheless, there an unattractive places that interfere uncertainty and discomfort. The main driver for this is the subjective appraisal of the personal security based on personal experiences and reports from friends and relatives as well as from the media. Cultural aspects and the living environment are other factors for avoiding specific places. Especially among young people, peer groups play a crucial role in the selection of places. The project examines, which places in Vienna are avoided by adolescents and what motifs are behind these decisions. For the survey, we use web-mapping technologies and photo documentation. Within workshops we discuss the different motifs as well as the “In-Site view” and the “Out-Site view” to initiate a transformation in thinking with the goal to strip of barriers.
