Invisible hands? - Informal employment in the service of resource efficiency in urban China
Abstract
The term “informal” refers to those activities of economic actors and units that are not or insufficiently covered by formal arrangements. The steadily growing and resource demanding economy of China is highly dependent on an army of informal workers, mostly internal migrants from rural areas. They work under precarious conditions related to contracts, income, working conditions etc. Urban informal actors are often the only ones providing services with respect to waste collection, processing and recycling. This project analyses the role of the informal economy in China with respect to its major actors, activities and characteristics in times of globalisation and economic crises. A specific focus is put on the informal sector in waste management assessing the contribution to resource efficiency in urban China along the value chain. The basis for future changes is a sound knowledge of the informal actors and their interlinkages within the recycling value chain.
