Valuing (travel) time: Models and data for activity scheduling
Abstract
Travel time savings are a key criterion for the evaluation of infrastructure investments. The current methods for the evaluation of travel times neglect the fact that (i) a part of the saved travel time is ploughed back into travelling, (ii) the travel time savings are often below the threshold of perception, and (iii) there are inconsistencies between different methods of assessment. In this project, a new method for surveying, modeling of valuation of travel time is to be developed, which takes into account the times assigned to travel and non-travel activities. The revealed preferences are measured using a novel mobility-activities-diary. The measurement of stated responses to changes in travel times takes a wide range of reactions into account in order to understand and model the changes in the activity patterns from a holistic point of view. The main results of the project are (i) new methods for mobility-activity surveys, (ii) the first-time modeling and evaluation of travel times on the basis of explicitly collected data for this purpose, and (iii) measure-sensitive models for describing activity patterns.
