Impact of further hydro-power facilities on the water temperatures in the River Pielach
Abstract
The River Pielach has low impacted river section but also hydro-morphological impacted stretches. Beside continuum interruptions, water abstractions and impoundments manifest the major human impacts. Water quality problems play a minor role. The hydro-morphological changes have an impact on the water temperatures particularly during low-flow periods in the summer. Additionally, a potential removal of the shoreline vegetation may deteriorate the situation. The downstream section of the River Pielach showed recurring water temperature peaks, especially in sections with residual flows. Additional hydraulic engineering potentially impact the native fish fauna. This study should clarify (1) if the River Pielach is affected by water temperature increases due to hdro-morphological impacts and climate change, and (2) if a potential extension of hydro-power facilities in combination with other human impacts (e.g. removal of shoreline vegetation) may deteriorate the current situation.
