Inventory Historical Stone Walls Bludesch-Ludesch-Thüringen
Abstract
Inventory Historical Stone Walls Bludesch-Ludesch-Thüringen The project “Inventory of Historical Stone Walls in Vorarlberg”, which is in its fifth year by now, aims at research and documentation as well as preservation and maintenance of historical natural stone walls in municipalities of Vorarlberg. In 2013, the observed municipalities are Bludesch, Ludesch and Thüringen, which are subsumed as the “Blumenegg-Communities”. Small structures like natural stone walls are characteristic elements of varied cultural landscapes. They give evidence of cultivation and social history of a region as well as of the construction trade, craft knowledge and skills of their builders. The three municipalities are located at the valley bottom on the bright side of the valley Walgau, in the south of Vorarlberg. They share a history under the rule of the independent authority of Blumenegg, which has been held by various sovereigns throughout the centuries. Blumenegg has been adjoined with Austria very late (1814), as one of the last dominions of Vorarlberg. That unique history shaped the development of these municipalities. There are two main economical factors which determined this development and also formed the landscape in the area of the “Blumenegg-Communities”. For centuries there has been a large viticulture which lasted at least until the end of the 19th century. With textile manufactories from 1830 on Bludesch and Thüringen had a very early industrialization. The historical natural stone walls are very close related to this development of the region. The documentation of construction and inventory of the walls in the municipalities are the basis for further analysis of the cultural landscape and detailed source research in order to classify their age and value. Additional important emphases are development goals and measure concepts for handling the historical elements of cultural landscapes. Planning and organizing an implementation project and carrying out the reconstruction of one of the researched objects should be the beginning of maintenance and conservation of the historic walls. Benefits of the project This project is intended to contribute to a respectful, professional and foresighted dealing with cultural heritage in cultural landscapes and settlement areas. In addition to the inventory of preserved historical natural stone walls, particular attention is given to historical wall construction methods and the future maintaining and renewing measures. During the project maintenance or reconstruction for one of the historic objects will be planned. With the help of a professional, the municipality will put this implementation project into reality. This is supposed to build the foundation for maintaining regional Know-How in terms of craft knowledge and skills to build natural stone walls and encourage to following maintenance projects.
