Understanding and Directing Small-scale Private Forest Owner Behaviour towards Climate Change Adaptation
Abstract
The aim of this interdisciplinary project is to investigate the behaviour of private forest owners in relation to climate change and subsequent silvicultural adaptation measures. In addition to forest owners’ perception of climate change and its potential impacts, it is further relevant whether, and to what extent, their willingness to implement adaptation measures can be influenced. In the long term, adaptation measures will be necessary in order to preserve forest stocks and the various forest functions. Furthermore, risk management and hazard defense play an important role as preventive silvicultural measures. The sub-project conducted by the Institute of Landscape Development, Recreation and Conservation Planning, focuses on the social-science portion of the project and will apply a survey including a choice experiment. The combined findings of all project partners will provide an insight into different strategies to reach and motivate the diverse types of private forest owners and which incentives (e.g. financial support, personal consulting, guidance, or targeted information) may have an impact on them. The project concludes with specifically targeted policy recommendations each private forest owner type.
