Rough Carpet: Innovative Contribution to Bed Stability in Rivers
Abstract
Many large alpine rivers have strong tendencies of bed degradation. These tendencies involve risks of endangering infrastructure and being a threat to the population. This project is about the development of an innovative structure for bed stabilization in rivers. The so-called "rough carpet" (in German: “Rauteppich”) was designed for decoupling narrow and widened sections of a river, but can also be used as a stand-alone structure and replace low non fish-passable sills. The principle of the rough carpet is based on energy dissipation due to extreme roughness. The rough carpet will be developed using a hybrid approach, combining physical model tests in the laboratory and numerical simulations.
