Effect on harvester productivity by the use of target-oriented silvicultural and operational planning in thinning operations of spruce stands
Abstract
An increasing demand of round wood linked with increasing chances of revenues offers forest owners to focus also on thinning operations which where untended. During thinning operations the need of professional selections of trees is discussed. The number of operations without any marking of trees is still increasing. The aim of this project is to evaluate productivity, quality and costs in thinning operations based on machine derived data of a harvester linked with the information on marking trees for selection or not. An additional goal is to quantify the extra costs and the effect of target-oriented silvicultural and operational planning in thinning operations. In a first step automatically recorded machine data will be used to derive a productivity model. The effect of target-oriented silvicultural planning on harvesting productivity will be analyzed based on the factorial study layout at the site including detailed stand data which will be linked afterwards with the machine data. The expected result should show the effect of well-planned thinning operations of harvesters compared to sites without any planning where the operator has to do all the silvicultural decisions. This project includes the following aims: -Comparative analysis of selective thinning with and without marking (skid trails, stand) on the productivity of the harvester as well as meeting the silvicultural targets. -Economic review (marginal return I) selective thinning with and without marking (skid trails, stand) and forecast the medium-term impact on the stand development -Development of forest- and silvicultural-technical arrangements as a decision support for goal-oriented approach and efficient implementation of thinnings in spruce stands with the full mechanized harvesting technic.
