Attitudes and satisfaction of ethnic groups regarding the Wienerwald Biosphere Park: a pilot study towrds the integrative function of peri-urban protected areas
Abstract
Biosphere Parks have the objective to involve all stakeholders in planning and management processes. Also their activities and education programmes should be open to all groups of society. Research in Northwestern European countries has shown, that people with specific ethnic backgrounds are under-represented as user groups as well as in participation processes as stakeholders in recreational and protected areas. The recreational use of these communities more often focuses on inner-city areas or greenspaces in the close neighbourhood, than on non-urban green. So far there is almost no research on this topic in Austria. With this pilot study a first understanding should be gained. Within the Austrian Biosphere Parks, the Wienerwald Biosphere Park has a specific role due to it's proximity to the city of Vienna, which has the highest number of inhabitants with migration backgrounds in Austria. The management of the Wienerwald Biosphere Park is highly interested in directly addressing migrant groups and developing specific offers for them. The central research questions of this project are: • What role do peri-urban recreational areas play for selected ethnic communities in the context of individual leisure behaviour? • Which requirements do these communities have concerning the Wienerwald Biosphere Park? • Which use barriers are perceived? • What role can the Wienerwald Biosphere Park play in supporting the integration of people with migration backgrounds? • Which target-group specific measures can be developed by the management of the Wienerwald Biosphere Park? Due to the character of a pilot study these research questions will be analysed using qualitative methods. To overcome language barriers and to allow interaction with the target groups in their native language, the process will be conducted by bilingual researchers. Exemplary for the diversity of ethnic backgrounds, the research will focus on the Turkish and Chinese communities. The research with the Turkish community will focus on the 16th city district ‘Ottakring’, which is located in the area of the Wienerwald Biosphere Park and characterised by a high number of Turkish immigrants. As a second study area a municipality in Lower Austria with a large number of immigrants will be chosen (Purkersdorf or Berndorf). Contacts to the ethnic groups will be facilitated via cultural organisations. In a first empirical phase focus group discussions will be implemented with representatives from administrative authorities, the park management and cultural organisations. In a second phase qualitative interviews with actual and potential users of the park will be conducted, complemented by direct observation on site in areas with high usage by immigrants. Finally a pilot action will be organised in cooperation with the park management. Based on the experiences from the empirical phases, first recommendations for future strategies will be formulated.
