Abstract:
In this paper recommendations for an assessment and ranking method to evaluate the fire spalling risk and extent of concrete mixtures is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the influence of the permeability, the porosity and the moisture content on spalling. X-ray diffraction and simultaneous thermal analysis provides insight into the mineralogical composition during heating. Fire tests on specimens with varying saturation degrees allow the identification of key parameters and their influence on explosive fire spalling. With the obtained dataset, correlations between the key parameters and the spalling behavior are established and a ranking and evaluation method for the spalling risk, spalling volume and maximum spalling depth of concrete mixtures is introduced.
