(2017): Regional Energy Wood Logistics - Optimal Locations and Catchment Areas of Storage Locations
AUSTRIAN J FOR SCI. 2017; 134(3): 201-224.

Abstract:
The share of renewable energy produced from solid biomass increases. The additional demand of solid biomass in terms of energy wood has to be supplied efficiently. To secure these requires a good supply network. The presented study describes a framework, which uses a MIP optimization model and scenario analysis to determine optimal storage locations, supply areas and transport distances. Different levels of energy wood potentials in the study area Styria will be tested. The costs for comminution and transport amount between 10.70 and 11.50 EUR per cubic meter loose in optimal cases, whereby transport costs have a share of 68 to 78%. Should 30% of the yearly demand supplied via storages, the model suggests four central locations for storage in the study area. Transport distances from forest to storage locations are in a range of 19 to 23 km and from storage to heating plants.
