Abstract:
A coupled method is proposed in this work to model the tensile cracking in compacted clay, which combines radial point interpolation meshless method and finite element method. The potential cracking area is automatically converted from FEM to meshless method with specific criterion, and then adaptively refined. Strain softening property of compacted clay is taken into account using an isotropic Rankine damage model. The mesh dependency is eliminated by adjusting the shape of materialxxxs strain softening curve according to fracture energy and node space. Two numerical examples of laboratory tests are presented. The results obtained show that the proposed method is applicable to the numerical analysis of tensile cracking.
