Abstract:
Application of starch in paper industry is wide-spread. Since starch retention in paper is an important factor for process technology and economy as well as the quality of the final product, a couple of methods for starch analysis in paper samples have been developed over the years. However, most of them are very specific, problematic for samples with varying matrix and frequently difficult to handle. The principle of the following new method for determination of cationic starches by pyrolysis - gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) bases on analysis of functional groups which have been introduced in the course of starch modification. Appropriate standardization provided, starch can be determinded quantitatively inmost samples of the paper making process, independent on the type and content of any other components.
