Abstract:
Palm oil empty fruit bunches were separated by supercritical extraction coupled with a delignification process into four fractions, namely fatty acids, cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose. After extraction of the fatty acid fraction by supercritical carbon dioxide the material was delignified in a CO(2)-assisted organosolv pulping process. The fatty acid fraction was characterized by GC-MS, all other fractions were characterized by FTIR, pyrolysis-GC-MS and by determination of the acid-insoluble lignin by the Klason method. The molecular weight of the residual cellulose fraction was examined by GPC. The investigated cascade process separates the raw material into two polysaccharide fractions of approximately 40% and one lignin fraction of 18%. The fatty acid fraction amounted to 2% (w/w) of the raw material. The CO(2) extract consisted mainly of two fatty acids: hexadecanoic acid and octadecanoic acid. The raw material exhibited a lignin content of 22.4%. After pulping, the polysaccharide-enriched fractions exhibited a lignin content of 8.5% and 7.1% in the cellulose fraction and in the hemicellulose fraction, respectively. The lignin-enriched fraction had a lignin content of 84.6%. The molecular weight of the residual pulp was found to be around 1.6 X 10(5) g/mol. In this work, it was demonstrated that CO(2)-assisted organosolv pulping with ethanol/water can effectively be used to separate the main fractions of oil palm empty fruit bunches. The pulping process can easily be combined with a preceding CO(2)-extraction step and thus better utilize the high-pressure extraction equipment and increase the added value generated by the process.
