Abstract:
Investigations into vegetative and generative parameters of peach and nectarine cultivars under organic cultivation and Pannonian climatic conditions. The objective of this five-year field studs), was to test peach and nectarine cultivars for organic production in Eastern Austria. 117 spring 2003 twelve cultivars were planted on the rootstock 'Cadaman' in the experimental orchard of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna and cultivated according to organic guidelines. The attention was focused on the susceptibility for diseases such as peach leaf curl (the fungal pathogen Taphrina deformans causes a blistering of the leaf tissue which consequently appears like a curled leaf) and Monilia ssp. Furthermore, the blossom, growth and yield were examined. 177 the laboratory the following parameters concerning fruit quality were analysed: firmness of the flesh, characteristics of the stone, content of vitamin C, soluble dry matter and pH-value. The results show that the different blossoming dates of the cultivars did not have any influence on the extent of frost damages in 2007, probably because the frost occurred a few weeks after blossoming. Concerning peach leaf curl 'Diamond Princess' and 'Sweethaven' were the most sensitive cultivars (20 % of the analysed leaves were infected) in contrast to 'Weingartenpfirsich Eibesthal' which showed the lowest infection rate (2 %). The highest yields in total were produced by the cultivars 'Redhaven', 'Mireille' and 'Benedikte' while the heaviest fruit in average were produced by 'Benedikte, 'Mireille' and 'Royal Glory'. According to the results of yield, fruit quality and resistance against diseases 'Redhaven', 'Sweethaven, 'Redcal' and 'Mireille' can be recommended for organic production, 'Benedikte, 'Royal Glory' and 'Red Robin' with restrictions.
