(2020): The Gravel Bar Consolidation Meter: A novel measuring device for determining the consolidation of gravel bars
WASSERWIRTSCHAFT. 2020; 110(4): 19-33.

Abstract:
The consolidation of a gravel bar influences both the ecological functioning as a spawning ground and the erodibility of the sediment in general. So far, there was no way to determine this parameter in a quantitative and reliable way. A newly developed measurement device called "Gravel Bar Consolidation Meter" now enables the determination of the level of consolidation of a gravel matrix in situ. More than 30 measurements in the field attested its quick and easy handling as well as its general functionality. Combining measured shear stress values with granulometric analysis from tested sediments showed a high linear correlation of measured values with grainsizes of the subsurface layer. In addition, if measured values are related to grain size (e.g. d(50)), a strong correlation between the measured value and fines was found.
