The importance of sediment dynamics in possible lines of tensions between aquatic ecology and hydropower use
WASSERWIRTSCHAFT. 2022; 112(2-3): 18-22.
- Abstract:
- Sediment transport and morphodynamics are important boundaries for the quality of the habitat in the aquatic and semi-aquatic area. However, there is currently no description of the present status and no risk assessment regarding the objectives of the Water Framework Directive concerning "sediment dynamics". With a focus on the bedload grain sizes, this article discusses various aspects related to the ecological response. A strongly altered sediment dynamic (too-little or too much), can have negative effects on aquatic communities. In the conclusions, an assessment of "sediment transport dynamics" is considered to be necessary for a process based solution approach in the discussion and optimization between ecology and the use of hydropower.
