- Abstract:
- Investigations into the suitability of pollinating cultivars for the apple cultivar 'Topaz' in organic fruit growing. Within a trial in 2008 different apple cultivars were tested in the research orchard of the university in Vienna as pollination partners for 'Topaz', a cultivar which is used in the organic growing system. Therefore, a survey concerning the process of blossoming and fertilisation tests with selected pollination partners such as 'Malus Evereste', 'Opal', 'Rosana', the rootstock 'Malus M9' and a variant of self-fertilisation and unregulated pollination (control) were carried out. The results show that the variant with 'Opal' as pollination partner led to the highest percentage of fruit (40.3 % fruit related to the number of originally pollinated blossoms). Also 'M9' (35.3 %) and 'Malus Evereste' (32.3 %) produced a high percentage of fruit, followed by 'control' (26.0 %) and 'Rosana' (25.7 %). On a small scale self-fertilisation with (2.5 %) and without (10.0 %) hand pollination of 'Topaz' could be proved. The variants with 'Opal' and 'M9' as pollination partners produced the highest share of well and normally developed pips.
