(2015): Impact of planting distance and rootstock on growth and yield of the sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) cultivar 'Regina' in Eastern Austria
MITT KLOSTERNEUBURG. 2015; 65(1): 26-32.

Abstract:
Impact of planting distance and rootstock on growth and yield of the sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) cultivar xxxReginaxxx in Eastern Austria. In a seven yearsxxx field trial (2006 to 2012) in the research orchard of the University in Vienna the influence of different planting distance (1.5, 2 and 2.5 m) in the row in combination with the two rootstocks Gisela 3 and Weiroot 72 on growth and yield parameters of the sweet cherry cultivar xxxReginaxxx was investigated. The rootstocks as well as the planting distance showed differences. After three years the trees on Weiroot 72 were more vigorous than on Gisela 3, no differences could be found between the different planting distances. The closer planted trees showed a higher yield per hectare than those planted in wider space. Over the years the single tree yield of both rootstocks was similar, related to growth it was higher with the more dwarfing Gisela 3. Regarding fruit weight the planting distance did not show differences, however, the fruit from the more vigorously grown Weiroot 72 were bigger than those from Gisela 3. Calculating yield and price depending on fruit size, Weiroot 72 with 2 and 1.5 m distance were economically the most efficient variants in our trial.
