Biogas production from a mixture of maize and sun flower
Abstract
The aim of the present project was to clarify if a mixed cropping of maize and sun flower will affect the biomass and methane yield per hectare. Maize and sun flower were grown in a mixture and separately. The crops were harvested and silages were produced. The suit-ability of maize-sun flower mixtures for biogas production was investigated and the possi-bilities for optimisation were identified. Compared with separate cropping the mixed crop-ping of sun flower and maize has advantages. The specific methane yield of the mixture from sun flower and maize silage was greater. Sun flower specifically balance the main disadvantage of maize which is the low fat content of the whole crop silage. Thereby the energy density of the mixed cropping silage is increased effectively. With maize the highest methane yields were reached at the time of wax ripeness (337 lN CH4 (kg VS)-1) and with sun flowers at the time of seed ripeness (365 lN CH4 (kg VS)-1). To reach a maximum bio-mass and methane yield per hectare in the mixed cropping, varieties of maize and sun flower have to be chosen whose growth and maturation patterns facilitate a maximum bio-mass and methane yield per hectare. In the youth development, sun flowers should not have a too strong biomass formation capability so that maize is not too much constricted in its growth. The biomass and methane yield per hectare of the mixed crops should reach its maximum when the dry matter content of the mixed crops range between 28 and 33%.
