Management services for new forest owner types
Abstract
In Austria, a strong demand for timber/wood from domestic resources exists. These could be provided in a sustainable way, however, especially in small forest properties the harvesting potential is considerably higher than the realised harvests. Reasons for this are lacking capacities but also lacking interest of forest owners. Various organisations such as forest owners associations or larger forest holdings offer support to forest owners in order to overcome the structural problems that are connected with the fragmentation of forest ownership. The aim of the study is to assess the potential for forest management services for small forest owners and to derive marketing recommendations for such services. The services offered to support forest management in small woodlots are manifold: management planning, organisation of harvesting operations and joint marketing. The study especially focuses on services that address also absentee or urban forest owners. The survey asks for interest in forest management in general and in offered services in particular. One important result of the study is the segmentation of forest owners into groups for specific communication strategies. On the basis of the market study, recommendations for the marketing of forest management offers are developed in close cooperation with the forest owners association Austria. The work on the study is implemented in the following three steps: 1. exploratory survey of forest owners and associations 2. representative survey of forest owners and 3. development of marketing strategies
