Effects of catch crops on yield and protein content of subsequent pea and winter wheat crops
Abstract
To optimize the cultivation of peas in organic crop rotations, the effects of a legume (common vetch) and non-legume (Phacelia) catch crop on the main crop pea and a legume catch crop following peas (peas left after harvest, peas left after harvest and common vetch) on the subsequent main crop wheat will be tested in a crop rotation (catch crop – pea – catch crop – winter wheat) in a field trial. We expect that by growing and fixing nitrogen of the legume catch crop the soil fertility, yield, and protein content of the subsequent crops pea and winter wheat will be increased.
