CelluCoat – Bio-based nanocellulose-reinforced wood coatings
Abstract
Oil-based coatings play an important role in the surface treatment of solid wood surfaces in flooring and furniture. By comparison, such bio-based systems dispose of excellent optical properties, but lack the mechanical performance of competing synthetic products. In this project, we aim at improving the mechanics of oil-based coatings by means of adding nano-scale cellulosic fibrils for reinforcement. Surface modification will ensure compatibility of the fibrils with the oil-based coating. It is expected that such a modified coating will dispose of significantly improved resistance against mechanical wear.
