Basics For A New Mechanic Pulping Proceeding
Abstract
Mechanical disintegration is a basic production step for the whole production chain of wood based materials. During the last decades several highly sophisticated machines and technologies have been developed to disintegrate wood. However, all these different methods (e.g. cutting, sawing, chipping, pealing, slicing, etc.) include the production of by-products and the destruction of the naturally optimized structure of wood. The basic aim of this project is the development and evaluation of new mechanical disintegration methods. By using these new methods the optimized structure of wood should be maintained. This means that these new mechanical disintegration methods should provide a high share of wood particles with improved strength and stiffness properties. On the other hand the production of low quality by-products should be prevented during the mechanical disintegration process. Existing knowledge of mechanical disintegration methods gained from other industry branches will be transferred to the wood industry branch. For a better understanding of existing and new mechanical disintegration methods, the energy transfer from the tools into the wood material as well as the energy transmission in the wood material substrate have to be studied. Material fracture and mechanical disintegration of wood at different conditions and different wood anatomical directions will be studies at different cutting speeds (i.e. static, dynamic and high dynamic processes). Experimental results should proof if existing disintegration methods are transferable to the wood industry. On the other hand the results will be used for advanced mathematical methods describing the rupture process in the wood material. Optimized particles will be further used to produces effective engineered wood products in the future.
