Elaboration of pre-requisites for sturgeon conservation in the Danube River Basin
Abstract
Working towards the achievement of this target, in January 2012 the “Danube Sturgeon Task Force” (DSTF) was created, which represents a network of experts from scientific, governmental and non-governmental organisations, including the ICPDR. In the frame of the DSTF the Strategy and Programme “Sturgeon 2020” was elaborated and finalised in July 2013. This document was welcomed by the ICPDR and the need to focus on urgent priority actions, including monitoring and mapping of existing and historic sturgeon habitats in the Danube River Basin, and ex-situ conservation measures in support of a self-sustaining sturgeon reproduction and the natural life cycle, was underlined. Furthermore, the ICPDR expressed support to the DSTF for the preparation of coordinated project proposals addressing the indicated priority actions and asked the Secretariat to facilitate the activities of project preparation. In line with “Sturgeon 2020”, the objectives of this contract are 1) to support the elaboration of a LIFE (the EU Financial Instrument for the Environment) project proposal on in-situ conservation in the Upper and Middle Danube River and its tributary Morava & Thaya (DE, AT, SK, HU, CZ) for the LIFE 2014 call for proposals, and 2) to elaborate a feasibility study on ex-situ conservation measures for the DRB in support towards the preparation of a project proposal on this topic.
