Abstract
To secure the national food supply chain, both the health and the fertility of the food producing animal need to be maintained and secured. The K project „ADvancements in Dairying in Austria (ADDA) creates the first time a national research space by intertwinning basic research in Area 1 “Fundaments of innovative dairying” with applied research aspects in Area 2 “Constituents of competitive dairying”. By this approach the ADDA consortium seeks both to fill the innovation pipeline and fertilize the current management practice in the dairy chain. Seven projects have been set up working on innovations in cattle nutrition (A1_P1), cattle reproduction (A1_P2), udder health (A1_P3), Milk quality (A1_P4), integrated farm management tools (A2_P5), reduction of use of antibiotics (A2_P6) and novel value chain parameters (A2_P7). Although being aware that a single project can never solve all problem in a field the foreseen advancements contribute to an integrated preventive health approach as foreseen in the recent EC wide animal health strategy and will help to further professionalize dairying.
