ADDA - Advancement of Dairying in Austria -P2
Abstract
Due the country’s topology, food production in Austria relies to a certain extent on milk production, resulting in local dairy specialties of a great variety. But dairying does not only have the benefit of regional and sustainable food supply. It also secures income in areas characterized by a lower degree of industrialization and, by leading to the cultivation of otherwise hardly useable land resources, plays an essential part in the success of other branches such as tourism. Ruminants are perfectly adapted to the utilization of grazing areas, converting a biosphere that is otherwise hardly useable by mammals into food of high value for the consumer. Milk and milk products are a main component of the human diet and increasing exports are significantly contributing to the success of the Austrian food processing system. To secure the national animal food supply chain, both the health and the fertility of the food producing animal need to be maintained and secured. The K project “Advancements in Dairying in Austria” (ADDA) will create for the first time a national research space by interlinking basic research in Area 1 “Fundaments of innovative dairying” with applied research aspects in Area 2 “Constituents of competitive dairying”. The ADDA consortium is thereby seeking both to cover major steps of the innovation pipeline and to stimulate the current management practice in the dairy chain. The advances expected from our work will contribute to an integrated preventive health approach as foreseen in the recent EC-wide animal health strategy. The project will thereby create a unique opportunity to demonstrate scientific novelty and visibility, leading to better integration and thus enhancing the competence of all partners in the field and will stimulate the harmonization of practices and capabilities, raising the partners’ competiveness and promoting the transfer of results and developments into production routines.
