Citizen Science pilot project - hedgehogs in gardens and integrating citizen science in Austrian curricula
Abstract
Teachers play the key role as citizen scientists within the Sparkling Science Programme due to the fact that they act as mentors and disseminators at their schools. Their engagement is the starting point for the motivation and participation of their pupils in citizen science projects. However, studies showed that the general framework of many of those projects lacks special considerations for this target audience. This results in a loss of motivation of teachers to engage in long-term citizen science projects. We will investigate which factors motivate teachers to engage in long-term citizen science projects and develop a profile of requirements for teachers engaging in citizen science based on this survey. The second project module will open the hedgehog monitoring module of the Sparkling Science Project for the general public in Austria. We will develop a strategy to engage the general public in a newly emerging citizen science project. To learn from other sucessful citizen science hedgehog projects we will meet British and German researchers and benefit from their experience in gathering data from citizen scientists. We aim at investigating the factors responsible for the absence or presence of hedgehogs in gardens of different management and structural composition.
