Wall Inventory Vorarlberg 2015; Bürs-Nüziders-Lustenau
Abstract
Inventory Historical Stone Walls Vorarlberg 2015 – Bürs, Nüziders, Lustenau The project ”Inventory of Historical Stone Walls in Vorarlberg”, which is in its seventh year by now, aims at research and documentation as well as preservation and maintenance of historical natural stone walls in municipalities of Vorarlberg. In 2013, the observed municipalities are Bürs, Nüziders and Lustenau. Small structures like natural stone walls are characteristic elements of varied cultural landscapes. They give evidence of cultivation and social history of a region as well as of the construction trade, craft knowledge and skills of their builders. The two municipalities Bürs and Nüziders are located at the valley bottom on the bright side of the valley Walgau, in the south of Vorarlberg. The inventory of Bürs and Nüziders will close an important gap in the valley Walgau, which is very rich in important historical wall structures. The wall of Lustenau, a boarder wall between two alps, is located in the municipality of Hohenems. In addition to this wall in the alps the entire municipality of Lustenau is tested on more walls. The documentation of construction and inventory of the walls in the municipalities are the basis for further analysis of the cultural landscape and detailed source research in order to classify their age and value. Additional important emphases are development goals and measure concepts for handling the historical elements of cultural landscapes. Planning and organizing an implementation project and carrying out the reconstruction of one of the researched objects should be the beginning of maintenance and conservation of the historic walls. Another part of this year’s project will be the finish of a stone wall guide. It should provide practical and concrete guidelines for the handling of historical stonewalls. The publication focusses on responsible parties in the municipalities and the regional government authority as well as local initiatives. Its chapters will cover the following topics: different types of walls and their meaning for the regions where they appear, basic principles of the assessment of their value, how to set up a reconstruction workshop, building principles and the maintenance of dry stone walls. Benefits of the project This project is intended to contribute to a respectful, professional and foresighted dealing with cultural heritage in cultural landscapes and settlement areas. In addition to the inventory of preserved historical natural stone walls, particular attention is given to historical wall construction methods and the future maintaining and renewing measures. During the project maintenance or reconstruction for one of the historic objects will be planned. With the help of a professional, the countries road authority will put this implementation project into reality. This is supposed to build the foundation for maintaining regional Know-How in terms of craft knowledge and skills to build natural stone walls and encourage to following maintenance projects.
