Genetic identification of arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus in several Austrian lakes using microsatellites.
Abstract
The goal of this small project is to identify lake-specific nuclear DNA markers (private alleles) from one or more populations of Arctic Charr. If lake specific alleles are identified it implies that little introgression has occured from stocked material and that these populations may represent evolutionary significant units worthy of protection. More importantly, these alleles may serve future investigations in identifying the source of stocking material that has been distributed throughout Austria, both within and outside of the original range of Arctic Charr. This information can be directly applied to decisions concerning future stocking, rearing, and conservation programs for this economically and evolutionarily interesting species.
